Recipe for perfect, flavorful rice

Tip: Want to make brown rice? Add 1/4 cup more water and simmer for 45 minutes instead of 20. Tip: This recipe easily doubles, triples, quadruples, etc. to feed a crowd!

  • 2 tsp healthy oil/fat of your choice
  • 1 cup white rice optional step for best results: rinse rice in a fine-mesh colander until the starchy cooking water running off runs clear, then shake well to drain
  • 2 heaping Tablespoons Mesa de Vida cooking sauce of your choice
  • 2 cups water or low-sodium broth
  • Salt to taste


  • Heat a saucepan over medium heat. When hot add oil and swirl to coat.
  • Add your rice to the pan, stir well to coat with the oil. If you'd like to toast your rice at this point, cook until lightly golden brown, which takes an extra minute or two. Otherwise, proceed to the next step.
  • Stir in the Mesa de Vida cooking sauce of your choice. Cook for about 30 seconds.
  • Add water or broth, and salt to taste.
  • Bring to a simmer, then immediately lower the heat to low. For my flat-top electric stove low is too low, so I set it to 1.5. This will depend on your stove. You want the rice to be at barely a simmer.
  • Cover and cook for 20 minutes.
  • Fluff with a fork and serve. Enjoy!
