This is an easy and healthier take on a dirty rice recipe that makes the perfect 15-minute-meal*!

A healthier dirty rice recipe.

Our Creole cooking sauce adds all of the flavor, and transforms a couple of simple ingredients – rice and meat – into a global gourmet main entree.

Think of this dirty rice recipe as a healthier, more delicious “helper” style (you know the box I’m talking about) that makes you look like a gourmet chef, even on your busiest weeknight.

*I’ve used RightRice in this recipe, but I’ve also included instructions for regular white or brown rice, also.

I hope you enjoy! Cheers!

Dirty Rice with Mesa de Vida Creole Cooking Sauce

This is an easy and delicious take on a classic Southern dirty rice recipe. We used RightRice, which is a par-cooked, veggie and nutrition-packed rice blend, so this recipe from start to finish takes about 15 minutes, making it a perfect go-to weeknight recipe. Pair it with a side salad, or some simple sliced tomatoes and cucumber, or add extra vegetables such as extra diced green peppers, chopped broccoli or diced green beans when you're cooking your protein, and you've got a complete meal!
You can switch up the sauce, protein and veggies for a whole new recipe every time you make this simply delicious chicken and rice recipe! Try our Smoky Latin cooking sauce with chicken and roasted red bell peppers and frozen peas for a paella-inspired dish; try our Moroccan Chicken and Rice recipe over on our recipe page; try our Caribbean cooking sauce for a Caribbean twist; try our Mediterranean sauce and shrimp for a Mediterranean twist; or use tofu and extra chickpeas with any of our sauces for a protein-packed vegetarian version!
*We've included the recipe alterations if you're using uncooked white or brown rice.
Cook Time 15 mins
Servings 4 -6 servings

  • 2 tsp healthy oil/fat of your choice
  • 1 lb ground sausage pork, chicken, or turkey, preferably nitrate-free and sugar-free, lower-sodium; or use any ground meat or meat alternative of your choice
  • 2 Tb Mesa de Vida Creole cooking and seasoning sauce
  • 1 package RightRice original flavor
  • 1-1/3 cup broth or water
  • 1 pinch salt to taste

  • Preheat a large saucepan over medium-high heat. When hot add oil, swirl to coat.
  • Add the ground meat, stirring often cook until golden brown, crumbled and fully cooked.
  • Add the Mesa de Vida Creole cooking and seasoning sauce, RightRice, broth/water, and salt to taste. Stir to combine.
  • Bring to a boil, cover and turn off the heat. Let the pan sit for 10 minutes.
  • *Optional step, but one I love: As soon as the 10 minutes are up, turn the heat back on to high for 1 minute to let the bottom of the rice get just a bit crispy and browned.
  • Fluff with a fork and serve. Enjoy!

To make with regular white or brown rice instead of RightRice:

  • Use 1 cup of regular rice and 2 cups of broth/water. After browning the meat, add the rice, broth/water, Mesa de Vida cooking sauce, and salt to the pan. Bring to a boil, then cover and simmer over low heat for 20 minutes (45 minutes for brown rice) until the liquid is fully absorbed and the rice is fluffy.
